Barbaresco Tasting in Emo 26.02.2014

Last week Wednesday, there was a Barbaresco tasting in Gastrobar Emo´s wine bar in Helsinki. The Barberosco producer Montaribaldi was going to introduce their wines with the attendance of the winery respondents. I contacted Emo for the details and decided to go there. The entrance for the event was free of charge and that was surprising considering that type of wine (to make it clear, since it is illegal to serve free alcoholic beverages in Finland, during that event no one was served with a free glass of wine, only the entrance at the door was free, the glasses were filled up with about 1-2 cl of wine to taste and then after that they were on sale; it was possible to buy a glass of any desired wine, if you like).

When I arrived, I was expecting to see a crowd at the bar but it was little bit different than i thought, not that crowded, maybe because of the scheduling, that the event started at 16:00, or maybe some other reasons etc.

During the tasting, the owner of the Montaribaldi winery Luciano Taliano, the export manager Giorgia Tontodonati and the importer Gianluca Poggio were present too and after the introduction by Giorgia, we tasted the following wines:

Spumante Brut "Giuseppe Taliano": Citrus and green apple aromas on the nose, a nice, everyday´s sparkling.

Arneis DOCG "Capural" 2013: Fruity nose with reminiscent of mulberry, well structured in the mouth with a  buttery feeling. The medium body might handle more acidity too.

Barbera d'Alba "Frere" 2011: Opaque, dark ruby red with leather and tobacco aromas on the nose. Blackcurrant is dominant in the mouth with strong tannins but the tannins are integrated. There is a also a touch of salinity too. Still, I felt like it lacks a bit of balance.

Barbera d'Asti "La Consolina" 2011: Slightly transparent, dark red with purple rims. Baked fruit and blackberry with leather at the second nose and good acidity in the mouth with red forest berries aromas. This medium bodied wine has a long final with a satisfaction of blackberry and cassis. Delicious.

Barbera d'Alba "Du Gir" 2010: Transparent dark red colored. The first nose is floral with slightly honey and forest berries, very well balanced in the mouth. The fruity final has a touch of vanillin, for sure it had an oak aging.

Langhe Rosso "Trestelle" 2011: Transparent red color with fruity nose, light to medium bodied, good acidity with a little bit astringency.

Langhe Nebbiolo "Gambarin" 2011: Light red colored with a touch of brown -a typical look for Nebbiolo- The nose has raspberry and clove, medium bodied with a moderate final.

Barbaresco DOCG "Palazzina" 2010: Floral nose gets spicy quickly and licorice gives itself . The nose gets a fruity character in time. Medium bodied; very elegant, feminine, a very nice wine with integrated tannins and a long final.

Barbaresco DOCG "Sori Montaribaldi" 2010: First with ripe apple and leather aromas, the nose gets a berry character in time, medium bodied with strong tannins, more masculine compared to Palazzina. Very nice wine to enjoy with a fine balance and long final.

Barbaresco DOCG "Ricu" 2009: Licorice and leather on the nose, fruity with earthy notes, with significant but integrated tannins, well balanced, a fine wine. Delicious and elegant with a long final.

Barolo DOCG "Borzoni" 2009: Licorice is significant on the nose but all in all, the nose is little bit introverted.  Light to medium bodied, gracious, characteristic.

Moscato d'Asti DOCG "Righey" 2012: A classic Moscato d'Asti. What to say more? Just beautiful, just delicious with tropical fruit aromas. Some Moscato d'Astis´ sweetness obscures the fruitiness of the wine but this one does not have the problem at all. Such a nice wine.

All in all, it was a nice event with a Piedmontese touch in Helsinki, a city where a lack of wine culture helplessly exists despite the high consumption of alcoholic beverages. Also it was not an ordinary tasting since the wines are just great, as what is not great from Piedmont? :) I would like to thank everyone who had put effort in this organization and I salute them.

May your glass be filled with Piedmontese wine. Greetings.

Luigi Einaudi Barolo Terlo 2009

Transparent dark red with light brown rims. First nose has green notes like chives, anise then licorice gets the scene with leather. Blueberry notes are dominant in the mouth with a high acidity, which makes this wine crispy. in time the mouth gets a fruity structure. Medium bodied with nice, integrated tannins, following a moderate final with a touch of vanillin and gets closer to the balance in the glass after some time. 90/100 39,70/75cl/February 2014

Farnito Camponibbio 2007 (Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon)

A Super Tuscan style wine. The color is opaque, dark ruby red with purple rims. The first nose is extroverted, it has baked fruits then blueberry, raspberry, fruit jam and slightly blood come to the scene. An almost perfection in balance at the palate, it is like chewing a bunch of dark forest berries in the mouth. Extremely fruity palate is a great fun with a medium to full body. The fruity final is quite long. Tannins are significant but integrated. A very easy, pleasurable drinking with a nice and surprising satisfaction of velvety texture. A wine of moment, not necessarily something to eat together, this wine might be enjoyed just reading a book together or consumed enjoying the night with a special person. Non-spicy cold cuts like Prosc.Parma might be a pair if needed. Decent price/quality ratio. 92/100  28,50€/75cl/February 2014

Lo Zoccolaio Dolcetto d'Alba 2012

Opaque with yellow rims. The nose is dominantly fruity, a hint of lingonberry followed by blueberry. In the mouth, the blueberry aroma continues together with blackcurrant. The full body is even more prominent with the robust tannins, followed by a slight astringency. The final is long with a satisfaction of deep dark flavors. The wine relaxes quite easily with decantation. Quite a good wine for its price-quality ratio. I think it is very young right now and I am going to buy few bottles to age for some couple of years and see how it develops. It might be good with heavy stews and butter fried fatty pieces of red meat like entrecote. 85/100 12,73€/75cl/February 2014

Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Sagrantino 2008

Slightly transparent, dark ruby red with purple rims. The nose is a big surprise for a Sagrantino, it is extremely fruity and elegant, blackberry and blueberry followed by a slight rustic touch, a hint of leather. The nose is a great fun, I can spend my hours with sniffing this complex structure of aromas. In the mouth, the fruity background continues with strong tannins. Tannins are strong, little bit astringent but integrated and delicious. This beautiful velvety Italian has a medium to full body. It has a relatively masculen palate for its elegant, feminine nose. It is also possible to get hints of vanillin during the joyful final, which is long and pleasant. It might fit to red meat stews and cold cuts, or just, I would also love it to drink, enjoying the night reading my book. Delicious, complex structure, characteristic. Its a wine for nice moments. 92/100. Not available in Finland.

Domenico Clerico Barbera d'Alba Trevigne 2006 (Barbera 100%)

Dark ruby red with light red rims. The nose is dominated by baked fruits, a hint of licorice, blackberry and cassis. In the mouth, strong, sharp tannins with a little bit astringency. Full bodied. The after taste has a touch of vanilla and chocolate. One of my favorite regions, one of my favorite varieties... A very pleasant wine by a good producer, like the Villa Matilde Taurasi... These are serious stuff... Not available in Finland.

Tasted among some other wines during a blind tasting.

Villa Matilde Tenute Alta DOCG Taurasi 2008 (Aglianico 100%)

Dark ruby red with purple rims. A very fruity nose, red forest berries among jam-like baked fruits notes with a small touch of woodiness. Sweetish in the mouth, in the mid palate, there is a nice touch of clove. The tannins are harsh, a typical Italian rusticity there is. The strong fruity structure is made up by the tannin and a character. This full bodied wine had a nice, long final with a satisfaction smile on the consumer´s face... Not available in Finland.

Soundtrack to your glass of intelligent wine:

While a bottle of Brunello, which is unexpectedly feminine for an Italian, talks to me tonight, I salute the master Neruda matching wine and music at the same time:

"I like on the table,
when we´re speaking,
The light of a bottle
of intelligent wine."

Pablo Neruda

Matching Music:

The Cinematic Orchestra - The Awakening Of A Woman

While the wine goes through the mouth with music into the ear, the beauty of the night is there with its pure starkly nudity.

May your glass be filled with happiness. Greetings.

Luigi Righetti Amarone Classico 2008

Light red at the rims and slightly brown in the midpoint. First nose has the hints of black pepper and quite fruity. Second nose has blackberry and blueberry and slightly woody. In the mouth, licorice and leather is accompanies by baked fruits like rose hip jam. It is not "the big Amarone" but still satisfying. The strong but integrated tannins are little bit astringent but no harm for the enjoyment. The nose reveals some vanillin in time. The final is moderate. It might be enjoyed alone or with cold cuts as well as spicy barbecues. 87.5/100 Not available in Finland yet.

Collina del Sole Amarone della Valpolicella 2009

Slightly transparent crimson. First nose earthy and has notes of licorice. Second nose dominated by licorice stronger and tar comes out in time. It is slightly fruity in the mouth, good high acidity, raspberry and blackberry aromas are accompanied by blueberry aroma. The leather sensed at the mid-palate is combining with spicy notes and tobacco insignificantly. Tannins are not that strong. This wine with moderate final should be decanted at least one hour before consumed. All in all it is still a nice wine to enjoy, even though you might not feel the expected iron fist in the velvet glove of an Amarone. It can match all kinds of red meat dishes, spicy casseroles and cold cuts. 87/100 Not available in Finland yet.

Pasta and Pizza: Despised Italian Cuisine

Trippa Alla Romana with a rich Parmesan topping
Unfortunately, there are so much people who think that pasta ("dough" in Italian) and pizza are the only expression of Italian cuisine. You can go to restaurants in Finland which claim that they are Italian restaurants, then in the menu, you can not see more than pasta and pizza and a few barbecue "things". But the real Italian cuisine, especially around the Italian capital city, there is a huge and old tradition of offal dishes like Trippa alla Romana - Roman style tripe- tripe cooked in olive oil and tomato sauce-, Animelle -Sweetbread-, Cervello-Brain-, etc. Now there would be some people with faces changing and making sounds like "uuagghh, I can never eat brain!" etc. and they can try to make an offal-eating-person feel humiliated with stupid reactions like "ohh, how can you eat brain? It is not meat agghhh, you are disgusting!"... Well, to eat the muscle meats like arms or legs of an animal and try to humiliate offal-eating-people at the same time is just very immoral and ignorant, according to me. What I had tasted, ate and loved since my childhood, the offal dishes, are the most delicious and interesting meat products. Those people are just afraid of the smooth texture of these meats, otherwise, offal dishes are also just protein and they are also some parts of an animal. To eat meat, or not to eat meat, that is the question. Also, those people who try to look like disgusted when I say that I like offal, are the people who have never tried to taste any offal dish in their life. So, if you have not tasted, for example, any apple before, how can you say that you hate eating apple?

Back to Italy, yeah, okay. So in Italy, if you go, I suggest you, of course, to try different kinds of pastas (=doughs). The pizza and pasta are served as a part of the starter idea in Italy, right after antipasti, if you skip antipasti and do not feel so hungry, anyway, just order a pasta dish and share with your friend, for example Amatriciana or Carbonara to taste the real one (of course not in a tourist restaurant, I will write about some restaurant reviews in this blog too). I call it "real" because in Finland, for example Carbonara is prepared with milk cream, which an Italian would never respect and eat, as Italians say. Unfortunately in Finland, lots of pasta dishes cooked with heavy creams in restaurants, which sometimes fit but mostly do not fit. A pasta with vegetables finished with a touch of cream and a drop of orange juice will be for sure delicious, as I had cooked when I was working as a cook. But our chef was cooking Carbonara also with cream, which actually should be prepared with egg yolks. To prepare a certain dish, there are basic elements that you can not change, if you change those elements, the dish is not that dish anymore, so a Carbonara sauce with cream and without egg yolks is not Carbonara anymore... Honesty, according to me, is the most important thing also in the kitchen, as it is in any part of life.
See how blonde the Carbonara is... Egg yolks!!!

This is one portion of Amatriciana which is shared in two plates, you can always ask for a second plate to share your food in good Italian restaurants where not the tourists but the locals eat

Then you should order a traditional dish like Trippa alla Romana-Tripe in tomato sauce- or beautiful soft pane-cooked brain pieces or sweetbreads, or Coda alla Vaccinara- Oxtail stew with vegetables, etc. to deeply understand the culture of traditional Italian dining. You can see a beautiful woman eating tripe or an Italian gentleman eating oxtail who is not using fork&knife but using his fingers, as it should be done with no shame. Because these people protect and internalize their culinary culture, it is not something to be ashamed for them as it should not be. So what I want to come up with, eating with fingers is an issue for the tourists. Use your fingers if you order a dish that should be eaten by hands, like Oxtail. If you try to eat oxtail with fork&knife, first of all, you will fail, that oxtail is full of bone and you will not be able to get the meat between the bones. Second of all, it is very rude and stupid looking, to try to show a "fake politeness". It would look very rude to eat a steak with fingers, so it is proper and polite to use fork&knife. So just the opposite way, for eating a piece of delicious oxtail, do not use fork&knife, the proper and polite way is, using the hands. That would be pizza too, do not feel embarrassed of eating pizza by using hand, you will see Italians eating around, using their hands and licking the oil on the fingers. This is the fun about dining! Also the Italian wines are some other master piece to talk about of course, a nice glass of Italian red will beat the strength of tomato sauce of your meal for sure. Or if you dont feel like wine, Italians make great beers. I have always liked the Italian wines, but I did not know that they can make great beers too.
Oxtail -Coda Alla Vaccinara-

How to eat Oxtail ;)

Oh, forgot to say, do not skip to try the seasonal dishes, like artichokes, fried zucchini flowers, or the classic snacks like suppli, arancini, porchetta etc. Ahhhh porchetta... The whole pork body with herbs inside, roasted on fire... Dont know what to say... Art of living...

Porchetta...
Porchetta cutting/preparing, you can find random Porchetta shops while rolling around or go into markets and ask if they have

Porchetta... Great snack. Cheap, tasty and easy lunch in Italy
Deep fried "Jewish Style" Artichoke, fried Zucchini flowers, Suppli

Zucchini Flowers, a delicacy in several Mediterranean countries
Suppli, pane-fried rice balls with tomato sauce and cheese
Different supplis
Costoluto -Beefsteak- Tomatoes a must taste in Italy
Artichokes :)
Deep fried Brain

Left Fork:The curves of the Brain - Right Fork: A piece of Sweetbread

66cl, the size that beer should be :)

Size of a pizza (see the fork), this was 6€ and it was possible to taste the freshness of all the ingredients

What about the restaurants and prices? I suggest no one to sit instantly in an unknown restaurant looking to a monument, for example, some restaurants facing through Pantheon in Rome. They are almost all tourist traps and just in the street behind, you can find the same dishes for half price. A pasta might cost between 10-15€ at those places, which is extremely expensive for Italy! Unfortunately the pasta dishes might cost between 13-25€ in Finland, this is the Finnish scale, but the pasta is a part of starter idea there and big portions of delicious pastas might cost between 3-7€ in Italy in a normal restaurant. If you do not believe how cheap it is, I had taken photos of some Menus, you can see down here. The main dishes might cost 5-12€ and the wines are extremely cheap, a bottle would be opened starting about 8€. So it is possible to find a very good quality wine to be opened for about 15-20€ in the wine list. Also, half size bottles are sold in the menus so you do not need to order a big bottle of wine if you do not feel like drinking the whole. The beer prices are 2-4€. Big size beer bottles are not 50cl, they are 66cl so one bottle is very enough for a couple. So, you can go to a restaurant, let`s say a group of 4, so you might leave after dining with a cost of 20-35€ per person including starter, main dish, dessert and a bottle, or, 2 bottles of wine for the whole group. I know, it sounds impossible for the Finnish point of view, but if you really know which restaurant you are going, it is very likely possible, as I experienced several times.

Check the prices, Menu of a very historical Pizzeria in Napoli
Check the prices, Menu of a Restaurant in my favorite Roman district Trastevere

It is also another problem how not to be overcharged in Italy. I experienced and refused to pay a lot of times. It had happened as bills like added extra dish or dessert, or extra drink you had never ordered etc. Do not hesitate to resist against the bill and even be ready for a stressful argument. Dont worry about being polite, as it is extremely rude to cheat the customer in a restaurant. Also cover, service and table occupation fees are some other Italian things, it is stupid to pay cover-mostly the salt on the table- to pay service- if I want to feel like leaving tips, I can, do not charge me for it- to pay table occupation-where I will put my plate and eat my meal if I dont have a table-. But there are Italian restaurants which are not charging all of these or even non of these. I will write some restaurant reviews soon, but if you are already looking for a restaurant name to eat in Rome, then try Cul De Sac.

More posts about the topic will be coming...

Back from Italy

Back from Italy to the raining land. Wonderful holiday, a lot to write, great wines tasted there and to be tasted here. It has been a long time since I wrote the last time. Italian trip something to do for everyone if you already know where to go, what to do, where to eat and what to drink. The beautiful Italy can be a hell, or heaven. It can be a money trap for a tourist or it can be an inevitable home to explore for a "flaneur". Hopefully to write some stories from Italy soon...

May your glass be filled with happiness!

A trip to Summer

Summer never comes to Finland, if it is a bit warm, then it is extremely cloudy and rainy, or snowy; if it is sunny, then it is extremely windy and cold, you have no chance if you do not have your thick, heavy, big winter jacket. So a trip to another geography for winter-jacketless days is mandatory if you already live in Finland and want to feel again "alive".

So hopefully a trip to Italy next week, having some good wine, good food, sun warmth, then back to Finland full of wine-ish stories to write.

May your glass be filled with happiness, Cheers!

Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella 2011, Italy ( Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Alch 12%)

Light red transparent color with purple notes on the rims. The nose is a bit extroverted and fruity. Grape molasses and rose hip jam notes leaves the stage to wood, slightly leather and alcohol at the second nose. In the mouth some notes of damson and cherry, a bit dilute, tannins are strong but integrated. Acidity is satisfying. In time, it leaves the feeling of sour fruits on the palate. The short-moderate final is  fine. But overall, nothing so big, not a surprising wine. Even a bit industrial. But it is a food wine, it would fit well a wide variety of red meat dishes, could be drunk at home parties, picnics etc. The fruity notes of Valpolicella is there but not too deep. Try it as a table wine with food. The curiosity and qulaity of Masi wines are on parallel with the price. 84/100 Price: 10,90€/75cl/April 2013

Thursday, 11 April 2013

Masi Campofiorin 2009, Italy (Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Alch 13%)

Opaque, purple on the rims and dark ruby red in the mid. First nose: Cured meat, blackberry, fresh pepper, leather. The legs are thick and slow. Second nose is licorice, tobacco, slightly oregano and blackberry. This medium-bodied wine has strong tannins, rich and delicious as a bit out of usual. In the mouth, the licorice and red forest berry-aromas are strong while the notes of fresh green pepper, dried orange peels and slightly vanillin slowly get the stage. The moderate-long final is warm and under the alcohol effect.

This wine is like leaving a small gap for the cured meat, so it fits very well with the charcuterie products, "very light" cheese types, a nut cocktail made of almond, pistachio and walnuts, mushroom dishes cooked without cream, barbecued chicken and unspiced barbecued red meats without sauce. 88/100 Price: 14,99€/75cl/April 2013

Sunday, 10 March 2013

Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo 2008, Italy (Nebbiolo 100%, Alcl 14%)

Dark transparent ruby red with orange rims. First nose has extremely raisin, then honey, fresh baked cake, rose and vanillin. Second nose comes with blueberry, mulberry, chocolate, cloves and some tobacco. Very rich and intense in the mouth. I would call it balanced if the tannins are not that strong. They are extremely strong and this is a great wine to experience what astringency is. It is an extremely astringent wine but it is felt after some time during the long final, so still the quality of wine makes me feel like keeping the wine in my mouth for some time to enjoy, before swallow. There are blackcurrant, red apple, raisin and licorice aromas in the mouth with a hint of leather. The strong tannins of that full-bodied wine can handle strong dishes too. It is a serious wine. This DOCG Barolo is highly recommended to consume with Mozart, a touch of "Le Nozze di Figaro", tested and proved. I would prefer it to enjoy by drinking without food. Good wine even though seems like too early/young to open a Barolo. 91/100 Price: 27.50€/75cl/March 2013

Ugo Lequio Barbaresco Gallina 2008, Italy (Nebbiolo 100%, Alch 14%)

Light ruby transparent color and get a bit darker into the middle. The first nose has sour cherry, apple, blackberry and a bit vanillin. The nose is very strong, fruity, extroverted. After some time earthy smells and black pepper appear. In the mouth, the tannins are strong, maybe they a bit disturb like giving some burning feeling. Damson aroma dominates first and the high acidity is satisfying. It a a bit dilute. Soon a  bit orange peel and licorice with a touch of leather. The very long final is warm and pleasant. It is elegant like a good quality Pinot Noir but still the tannins are affecting the balance and it is a bit dilute. This medium-bodied wine would be nice to drink alone but also fits very well with light cheeses (not heavy-fatty cheeses as we generally talk about a red here). It can fit grilled beef and pork as well as chicken, cleaning the palate very well. 87/100 Price: 21.90€/75cl/March 2013

Saturday, 26 January 2013

Verrocchio Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2010, Italy ( Corvina 70% Rondinella 30%, Alchl 13.5%)

Rims are crimson as a young wine and gets darker purple through the middle. First nose is very rich of aromas, intense and satisfying. The aromas like fresh fruits such as peach and cherry leave the stage to berry aromas after swirling, like raspberry, blackberry and a bit of leather follows them too. Vanillin is also sensed after some time and that can be a good hint for oak. This medium bodied wine loses nothing of fruity structure in the mouth, very rich and balanced. Even though the tannins create a bit dryness in the mouth, it does not effect the overall balance. With really low senses of tobacco and thyme come out during you enjoy the wine with a  relatively high alcohol content. But the alcohol is not breaking the balance. Tannins and alcohol do not fight against the fruit. You have a possibility of having different aromas in the nose slightly, for ex. green pepper in this almost elegant wine with a sweet-ish moderate final which makes you smile. A joyful day with friends or even alone while reading your book, this wine would be your accompany. I think it would fit a variety of dishes from white to red meats, fried or barbecued, as well as charcuterie and tapas/meze styles bites. Do not be afraid of cooling your wine for a while (usually people do not cool their red wines and also in Finland quite much restaurants serve reds very warm), especially this fruity one. No potential to age. When you decide to drink, no reason to decant, just drink as you open. 90/100 Price: 12.90€/75cl/January 2013 (Photo by Alko)
